lucy | 2014

The idea that Luc Besson tried to develop in this film is great. However, the film isn't that good. It is about a young woman, whom we don't know barely anything, - she's just an american woman living in Taiwan that speaks a little bit of french and it's not very good looking- that ends up being caught in a dark deal where she has to transport a bag of drug, inside her body, to a certain part of the planet earth and there she'd be free when they extract the bag.   Lucy ends up drugged after a beat of one of the captors, and from this point on, the film becomes very interesting because the drug increases the brain capacity progressively from 10% - the average of humans - to 100%. Meanwhile, another character is presented. Morgan Freeman becomes a Professor, named Norman, that is working on a theory where he wants to discover what could happen if a human could use more brain capacity than the average.  If the film would have centered the attention in...

guardians of the galaxy | 2014

The James Gunn film is set in a galaxy where the heroes haven't got the superhero profile. Peter Quill is a bounty hunt er that was taken away from his planet, the Earth, when he was just a boy. From his planet he only has a walkman with a cassette that has multiple songs.  It is noteworthy to say that the nostalgic songs and the reference to the movie Footloose (1984) where Kevin Bacon becomes a hero changing a situation by dancing makes this film different.  As said at the beginning, the characters have all a different profile that you wouldn't identify with a hero. They are selfish, they only look for themselves... When Peter steals something capable of destroying the galaxy from Ronan - the tyrant of the film  - Gamora (Zoe Saldana) has the duty to bring it back to Ronan, but she's planning her betrayal. Besides that, the Groot and Rocket want to capture Peter to earn money. This persecution finishes when they all go to jail and have to ally in order to get ...

summer mix [films] | 2014

This summer hasn't been memorable at all when it comes to films. I've had no time to review the ones I've seen but I think that any has been very interesting.  Probably, the best I've seen is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which combined the reflexion of what differences us from the apes (or viceversa) and the action. Andy Serkis showed that he is a master when it comes to perform those kinds of characters. Another one that was quite good was How to train your dragon 2, for kids this is a very entertaining film and for the adults as well; of course, it is not a classic but could be classified as remarkable film for families.  Other films I've seen are The Purge: Anarchy which did had a good story, it could have been a very interesting film because it talked about politics and the social differences but despite and the horror, and dark atmosphere that was noteworthy, it ended up being foreseeable and had no incentive - when it came to horror or actio...

the fault in our stars | 2014

The adaptation of the John Green's best seller has melted hearts all around the globe. The story of Hazel Grace, a girl who has terminal cancer, moves everyone, specially the teenagers, not only because of the cruel illness but also because of the real love, honesty and loyalty that this film shows. This is not a film about the the c urse of an illness and the divergence between being in love and the pain of knowing she's going to die... it is about pure real love, the love everyone would like to feel and give.   Hazel (Shailene Woodley), as said, has terminal cancer. She deals quite well with it and has no major problems, she is used to it,  but she doesn't want to fall in love because she does not want to hurt people; at least, she tries to reduce the number of people affected to her parents and no much more. The love story between her and a Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort) aka Gus starts because of a book that captivates both of them because of the end, they don...

maleficent | 2014

On the 30th of may 2014, exactly 55 five years later of the launch of The Sleeping Beauty (1959)... the story of Maleficent is told. We already knew what happened with the sleeping beauty, Aurora, but we didn't knew why Maleficent did all what she did. In this film Angelina Jolie portrays stunningly the character of Maleficent,  a fairy that wanted revenge after seeing that the love of his life, a human, was so selfish and ambitious that was even disposed to kill her to be king.  At first, we see a Maleficent as a girl full of light and with a big heart. However, the disappointment of seeing that humans just looked for themselves frustrated her and her idea about love. She became a cold and dark woman, until she met Aurora, the King's daughter, whom she had hexed with a malediction taken from her sadness and anger against Stephan, the king.   Maleficent may seem a typical kid story, but as Disney has always done, it isn't just a fairy tale... it is a real s...

neighbors | 2014

The critically acclaimed comedy is a wild party of pranks, jokes but the best thing is that it has an honest reflexion of maturity and immaturity, about getting older and having responsibility - because Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly have new lifes. Instead, Teddy (Zac Efron) is about to get out of college and wants to party before starting to think about the future.  The positions in life of those two characters, Mac and Teddy, are clear since the beginning of the film. Mac has just moved to a new house, to establish himself and his family, while Teddy moves to the house next door because the frat he is in, burned the previous one. Teddy's speech when he moves to the new house is all about all of them being a legend in his fraternity, any other higher aspiration.  The battle between the family and the frat starts when the frat throws wild parties that Mac and Kelly would like to attend but can't because they have Stella, their little child. So, instead of declarin...

pompeii | 2014

Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything remarkable from this blockbuster... and there isn't nothing quite noteworthy I can think about to say: "go and watch that film" but I must say I didn't came out of the cinema thinking this was one of the most terrible films I had ever seen. No, this was one of the lots of films that you can watch just to spend some time entertained and to have an enjoyable 90 minutes with family, friends...   I read, somewhere, that it took so long to see real "action" scenes in this film, but this isn't true, if this film has something good, it is the timing and the fight and combat scenes were put in the right moments.  It's a film tha goes on fast - in every scene you learn something new. Sometimes it is so fast, that things like the love triangle isn't developed, you just now there's one because a few scenes show evident signs of it.  Besides this, there's nothing remarkable about the screenplay...

muppets most wanted | 2014

The fight between America and Russia is one of the most used topics in the hollywood films and this is not an exception. Muppets Most Wanted is the second part of the sequel that started with a very good film lead, obviously, by the Muppets; but also by Jason Segel and Amy Adams. This time they do not appear and Ricky Gervais (Dominic Badguy in the film) is the leader of the Muppets and it's headache because Dominic is the associate of Constantine, a criminal frog that wants to steal the joys of the english royal family.  The Muppets were desperate to find something to do and a tour seemed the best thing they could ask for... but it ain't going to be easy... because Kermit is arrested for, apparently, being Constantine and Constantine becomes the new leader of the Muppets that seem to not notice the difference between the frogs.1 This is the typical Muppet film, music, laugh, shows... but this time it could have been a bit more short. Besides that this is a good ...

gimme shelter | 2014

Gimme Shelter has received very good reviews in the US since it came out and finally I could watch this amazing film for which I've been waiting 2 and a half years. Vanessa Hudgens (Agnes "Apple" Bailey completely transforms herself t o portray a character inspired on a true story of a girl that had to leave her house and look out for help.  Apple, as she wants to be called, is a lovely and kind girl trapped in a world that has made her look and act like a totally different person - you can see that rapidly by only looking the way she dresses and walks... - but the only thing she is looking for is love and a family that cares about her. The film starts in a very dramatic way and it also moves you from the moment it begins. Apple is going to look for her father from whom she only has a letter. Her behavior and the differences between his father and the family he has built is going to make her run away again, but, unexpectedly, she finds out she is pregnant. The...

the grand budapest hotel | 2014

Wes Anderson's most recent fabulous and critically acclaimed film shows us a story that seems taken from another world because it's everything, but not plausible in lots of ways. The Grand Budapest hotel itself is quite magic and becomes a story as well.  The style of this movie is the Wes Anderson style, which means that there might people that really don't like or understand what's the point of the film because it doesn't have the comedic scenes we expect. It is a much more refined comedy lead by an amazing Ralph Fiennes that portrays Monsieur Gustave, a man that doesn't lose his way of behaving even if he is in prison. Based and inspired on Stefan Zweig works, this movie explains the arrival of nazism with a style and a screenplay that may not seem appropriate but that has some memorable quotes that denote that Zweig is behind those words.  Everything seems like a paranoia with no sense and that it has nothing to tell but it ends up being a ...
